About the event

With parents working in East Turkestan in the 1930s, Margareta Höök Wennfors grew up with that region in her heart. After living in India and Nepal, her interest and love for the Uyghur people led her to northern Pakistan. In 1998, she travelled with her husband in her parents' footstep by bus on the Karakoram High Road to Xinjiang.

Her talk aims to show how life was in East Turkestan in the 1930s through her parents’ Swedish mission work and caravan journeys across the Himalayas. A considerable amount of material from that region can be found in Sweden and Margareta Höök Wennfors will share where to find such objects while mentioning what Gunnar Jarring has meant to her. Her talk will be illustrated by many authentic pictures.

The speaker is Margareta Höök Wennfors, surgeon, traveller and author of “Called to the heart of Asia”.
