About the event
Over the last three decades, most consumer goods imported into Central Asia have been manufactured in China. More than three decades since the Soviet Union, it is possible to speak of a regional Central Asian marketplace undergirded by networks that connect manufacturing in eastern and central China to Xinjiang, the Central Asian republics, and often to Russia. These elaborate networks are partly explained by the fact that China has developed as a hub for global manufacturing. They are also explained by the fact that reform in China prioritized the development of the country’s productive capacities. This talk will trace the ideological motivations in China during the Reform Era that were instrumental in the making of a regional, Central Asian marketplace.
The invited speaker is Hasan Karrar, Associate Professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan.
